Field Tape Recovery
Tape to File

WellToDesk will extract data from old tapes, this include 9-Track tapes, QIC, DAT, Exabyte etc. The process starts with a direct transfer of the tape contents to an image on the computer’s hard disk, with the objective of only passing the original tape through our system once.

Many old formats were written on the fly during data acquisition. If we have an issue with the tape during reading, the data up to that point should be recoverable. This is why we want to read once and make an image, we may not know the software used to write the tape, and do not want to risk multiple reads of a tape to determine format.

Old obsolete formats can be converted to DLIS for use in modern interpretation packages. Where we cannot determine the format, we will try and crack the data type and in some cases use of a field print may aid verification of a conversion.

The equipment used is protected by UPS, and original restores are not attempted during bad weather conditions. The tape heads are cleaned before each read and the equipment regularly checked/serviced to maintain it in optimal operating condition. We have systems running DOS, Windows and Unix wth a variety of tape drives and backup software.
